Every social/societal expression seems to have an evolutionary explanation these days.

I think you misunderstand evolution. There are evolutionary ramifications to society and interpersonal relationships. That doesn't mean that it is all genetic. Humans have brains and the ability to both teach and learn and that has a great effect on survival rates. Some ethical reactions seem to be innate, say a revultion at the sight of gory death, but much ethics is taught. Those who learn and maintain the ethics of the society have an advantage in mutual protection and finding mates.

The proof(test) is in the exception. Unethical people, robbers for example, enjoy some niche advantage only when they are a small minority. This is similar to a monarch butterfly mimic which can enjoy the protection of the monarch poison reputation without the cost only if their population remains small compared to the actual monarchs.
