You are way ahead of me on that one.

I have no recollection of the draft being halted (Prior to Nixon ending it in 73)...just that the lottery system went into effect in the 60s.

I registered for the draft in Feb 62 and enlisted 2/28/62 before I had received a draft card. I am certain that draftees were in basic and AIT with me. I recall a coupla guys who switched from US (draftee) status to RA (volunteer) status to get into SF Training.

I was stationed overseas from Oct 63-Oct 66, and from Dec 68-Dec 72 so I may have missed that. I do recall the last draftees were discharged and the Army became all volunteer at Thanksgiving 1975. I was overseas again for nearly four more years after that.

I did not know Kerry is two months older than me. I wonder if he asks for the senior coffee discount at McDonalds?
I do know this. With a draft number of 39, Kerry would have been in the first draft call. I also know that many guys volunteered for service in the Reserves, National Guard and the Navy and USAF to avoid the Army and USMC. I see nothing wrong with that BTW. But I would really like to know if Kerry had a student deferment.

Democrats Charles Rangel and Chris Hollingsworth have introduced a bill calling for reinstatment of the draft. It is still in committee. Republican Senator Chuck Hagel joined them a few weeks ago. I believe the draft is necessary now and will be more so in the next 12-24 months.

There was a draft in 1967. Google

draft vietnam 1967

According to Selective Service, the draft lasted from 1948 to 1973. My dad was drafted in 1951 for Korea.
