This is not relevant to my point. We are stuck with a choice between violating the territorial integrity of an ally, a move that could bring down a government that we badly need to keep in power, or ceding a large safe haven to our enemies.

I think you did not quite capture the point I was making. Perhaps I was not as clear as I should have been.

My point is that violating the territorial integrity of an ally--Pakistan--is not going to help assist anti-terror efforts as much as many would think because the web of terror is far more ubiquitous than we know. There are lots of semi-autonomous groups that may or may not take direction from AQ which should concern us. They are spread world wide. Invading Pakistan's border territories would under the circumstances have no effect on terror.

In a nutshell, I'm becoming convinced that invading the border territories of Pakistan or even capturing OBL will not be a panacea. In fact, invading Pakistan would probably exacerbate the problem, though killing OBL might have some short term positive yet temporary effect.

I think we are on the same page, Steven.

Are you suggesting that we ignore our most serious problems because they are not easy to manage?

Of course not. I just can't think of anything particularly effective that we might do that would have a short term positive effect on the prospects of terror in the US. Diplomatic pressure, tracking of finances, better cooperation, etc., the obvious things, are probably being done already.

What do you suggest?
