The insider sales may or may not be significant. Here's why. If he sold shares at a loss, he might be able to deduct that against gains elsewhere. He may also believe that it will be at least 30 days before the stock has any chance of recovery, no matter what else happens in regard to ongoing trials. Thus, he can buy back the shares later on in anticipation of future gains, without creating a "wash sale" by buying before the 30 days are up.

On the other hand, the sale may reflect financial difficulties based on reluctance of Aventis to provide additional support needed for more trials. On the positive side, and unlike ImClone, the sales took place AFTER the news was made public.
