My post against the Draft to UW is what set off our discussion of it. I served as an RA with US's, and the mix was never good. Now that we have an all volunteer service, I see no reason to go back to it.

We have some on the right, like UW, who want it. The main push for it is from the anti-war crowd who remember Vietnam and know that the draft was the main reason for the outcry and push against that war. After Nixon went to the lottery, the anti-war crowd really lost oomph.

I was distressed to read that the NZ troops in Iraq had been ordered to stand down and not support their brother British soldiers. An extremely bad move on the part of your politicians. The Brits had to fight, on a moments notice, without the NZ support.
