The meal was served, and most of it was edible. I tried some cognac, but found it quite strong, as I am accustomed to an occasional beer or glass of wine, but not to any hard stuff. We were on about the sixth course of nine, about an hour or so into the meal, when the gentleman to my right, with whom I had attempted to converse earlier, turned to me and asked, “Do you speak English?” My jaw dropped, and I just groaned and nodded. Later, when I related the story to my mother-in-law (in French) she got a good laugh out of it, so I hope that you do, too. But maybe you just had to be there to appreciate it. pg, that is SO funny....great story on a somewhat related note, yesterday we were working on our home network and encountering some problems that necessitated a call to dell....meaning dell by way of bangalore <g>....so we have this really wonderful networking technician running us through the drill, my husband is having *some* difficulty in understanding him, so he waves me over and we put "mark" from bangalore on the speaker phone....my husband loves chatting with these guys and usually starts kidding around with them, so he told "mark" he had his interpreter in the room <vvbg>...."mark" was had a really good sense of humor and laughing at mr. md's scintillating repartee <g>....... and hmmmm..you are probably wondering where is she going with this and exactly how it relates to the story you wrote (hint: speaking french) when the "conference call" was over....i commented to my husband how great technology was, that we were sitting in our homes in the middle of the usa, carrying on a 45 minute conversation (free), joking around, accomplishing something together with "mark" half way around the world working from india.... pointing out how *WAY BETTER* "mark's" english was than our hindi <VVVBG!> and then commented...just imagine had history been revised and imperial india been administered by the colonial french instead of the brits... outsourcing? what outsourcing.....<g> btw...we told "mark" if were ever get to india, we wanted to take him out to dinner(he was extremely helpful!)...and he responded "i promise you, i will make it to the US before you get to india....at least i hope so" and we said we hoped so as well and wished him well, and told him, he had our phone number give us a ring when he arrives.. :)
