An Egyptian friend told me that clandestine teen-age sex is increasing in Egypt. Frightened of being discovered the couple sign a document of marriage, which imparts a possible religious OK. If they break up they destroy the document. This certainly starts them down the path of non-belief. It's a little sad to me. The usual ending of teen-age sex relations imparts a kind of tentativeness to such a relationship which to my early 20'th century mind would have seemed distressing. But anyway here we have a beginning of opposing the mullahs. Still the progress of the march towards reason and science away from theology, is slow. The battle between religion and reason is plenty important for our investments. (This last is a note to Big Brother Dave.)

I agree with your view that fundamental theocracies, such as Islam, are not going to be compatible with the changing world.

But we have a significant personal problem which complicates the picture.

Hi Elmat - My experiences with a number of Iranians and a few Turks here in Silicon Valley leads me to believe they don't fit into your stereotype of returning to 700.

Of course, I may have proved your point by picking one of the more secular nations and one that wants to be secular again.

If your view is correct, then most Islamic natins will not be able to have sucessful democracies and market economies.

Even the neo-cons have better opinion of human potential of the Muslim world.

my alternative of >>...they will extinguish as fast as the ex-USSR did<< - a sort of enlightment will separate the Islam out of state affairs and put it where Christianity is supposed to be -well, there's exceptions, like TX;\ - that is in private, personal sphere.

Actually, from the energetic point of view, the spreading out of holy days on Friday, Sabbath and Sunday is a great invention, decreased traffic congestions etc ... Any candidates for a holy Monday;)?
