We need more mental toughness to fight this war.

Most of us here are the "little orphan Annies" of this, it seems. Tom Paine wrote exactly the sentiment needed in "The Crisis."

These are the times that try men’s souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives everything its value. Heaven knows how to put a proper price upon its goods; and it would be strange indeed if so celestial an article as freedom should not be highly rated.

I like this cartoon - it's in French, obviously prison guards at Abu Ghraib urinating on what is obviously Iraqi prisoners, naked, except for black bags over their heads. The guards are saying to the prisoners, "it's been a year since we liberated you, and not one word of thanks."

Everybody go read FDR's speech: "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself."

This panic is unseemly.

Funny. I've used that reference here in the context of the panic of those who were so afraid of another terrorist hit that they approved of invading Iraq.

That, said, I agree with you that panic is always unseemly.

Sullivan sounds more upset than most of the Iraqi bloggers

Sullivan is a thoughtful man, much more thoughtful than the usual black and whiters who opine on Iraq. I imagine his upset comes from self-recognition and disappointment and humility. I expect him to make lemonade out of it and be back in the saddle quickly.
