Google news for recent stories reveals the Israeli Defense Minister calling the settlements an historic mistake. Other stories quote members of Sharon's government saying the Gaza settlements are all to be removed. news.google.com Thus one can only logically conclude the killings weren't really about the settlements. But you already know that.
