JDN good portion of arab countries were colonized either by British or French and in part by Russians. The conflict with islamic extremism is not a recent development. What is very recent is that former colonies turned into countries that openly support terrorism. Cold war added oil to the fire as when arab countries turned to one side and Israel to another. Israel, while mostly blamed by many, is not really a big issue. If Israel would take Russian side it is more likely than not that arabs would not be in a position to fight it. But islamic extremism would be there one way or another. One of more feared words in southern part of Russia was "basmach". They were islamic extremists even before the time of soviet union and way before Israel
