When I installed my router last week, I had to register it with my ISP. I am on ADSL. They need to know the MAC WAN address. On my router, this number is found in the hardware configuration. They then enable the connection.

I don't know if this applies to all ISPs and all router types. Just something to keep in mind, and you may want to ask your ISP for instructions.
