If you look at the poll numbers, you have to wonder if the misinformation from news media outlets like Fox, didn't help contribute to this mess. If young men went over there believing that the Iraqis were involved in 9/11 (as so many Fox viewers did) then you have to wonder if some of them weren't acting out of the same emotional gut response hate reflex that we see on SI. It's understandable for ignorant people to react that way, but it isn't really in our interest to encourage it.

On top of the misinformation that I'm sure a lot of soldiers were carrying around in their craniums, you have the problem of the inevitable sadist in the crowd. Sadists aren't common, but the military is a big institution, and sadists are going to show up in it. They've cropped up in every war- that's why we must always make sure the war is worth the inevitable savagery that is going to break out from time to time. Was this war worth it? Not up front- the justification for this war was crap. I suppose Iraq could turn out to be more stable, and less repressive in it's government than it was before- but that's a long shot, and only works for people who are willing to let a dubious end justify the means. That kind of thing doesn't sit well with me. Really horrible things can be done in the name of "good" when you are willing to use any means.
