When speaking as a writer and a master of satire, some hyperbole for emphasis and effect is not out of place. Had Mr. Wilde intended his remark as a philosophical or scientific axiom, one suspects he would have said "almost never true" rather than "never true". As it is...your criticism is nit-picking and misses the wisdom being offered. He clearly meant it as a perceptive observation on the consequence of unbridled faith, as well as offering sage advice in the field of romance.
