They've observed that it took public outrage to media muck-raking by leftist outlets and writers like BBC and Sy Hersch, and leaks by malcontents like Hackworth before the Administration openly admitted that there was something wrong.

In fairness, CB, I would not have taken the initiative to publicize this either. What we did was bad. However, there's no point throwing ourselves on our collective sword and surrendering the war if we don't have to. The crime was bad, but the potential punishment for all of us is way out of proportion.

I think that condemning the powers that be for creating a climate in which this happened is appropriate. And also for not warning the President of the leak. But I don't think failure to advertise it is was a fault. Covering up to protect oneself financially or politically or reputation-wise would be a fault. Trying to obviate damage to the country isn't. IMO.
