in the March germans just started to build up their forces. The original plan was for Russians to attack in March - maybe that what caused the confusion. Zhukov decided to allow germany to build up their forces and to make the 1st move. Zhukov made a mistake of committing his tanks too late because he was afraid that germans might trap his armored divisions. The result was that russians took more causalties than it was needed.

after the 2nd battle of kharkov in march '43, the soviet front was torn wide open... yet the germans could not exploit because of the mud....

if you want an example of the russians completely crushing the germans... look at the bagration (belyrus) offensive of jun/jul 1944...
