I've always had Fascism defined to me as concentration of the government under a nationalistic or ideological elite, with tight socio-economic controls over the private sector.

I know. That's because academia has a high concentration of Marxists. The definition you are familiar with is a Marxist parallel to Marxist definitions of Communism, Socialism and Capitalism.

If you ever get around to reading Paxton, he's excellent on this issue. Marxists never understood Fascism because Marx did not know it or predict it, and they don't think for themselves when confronted with problems.
