I'll tell them, "welcome back. It was a crazy notion that you had and you paid dearly for it but I knew you'd have to learn for yourselves." It's the same thing I tell my boys when they get a notion that I think is not going to help them. You see, I don't own them and if they want to try another path, they have the right as young men to do so. More importantly, whether I approve or not, they'll accept or reject my advice and do what they want. The parallels are striking. But maybe you don't believe the mission of trying to create a viable and moderate Iraqi state is worthwhile...Maybe you'd prefer to just see them kill one another in a huge civil war?? What do my preferences have to do with it. I'm not talking like a god that can "create a viable and moderate Iraqi state," I'm talking like a pragmatist who understands the concept that you cannot poke your nose into a foreign hive without getting attacked by killer bees. And, by the way, there's no honey for us there. ...we, as a democracy, have an OBLIGATION to spread such ideals around the world, where and when the opportunity presents itself. Fine, but such ideals are better spread by living such ideals rather than ignoring such ideals, curtailing such freedoms, and abandoning international rules of law. Or is that thinking too "liberal" to make any sense to you? Or do you think we ought to try to kill them for their own good. I'd personally rather get out of the way and let THEM do whatever killing (and dying) is necessary for them to learn the lesson that some systems work well, and some don't.
