The Future of Data Storage

The problem with the business case, says Meta Group's Phil Goodwin, is that I.T. organizations have been sold on the notion that they can use standing components and existing infrastructure of their Ethernet networks for storage. But that is not so.

At one time, it seemed that IP storage networks were an attractive prospect, promising significant cost savings through their ability to utilize existing networks and I.T. expertise. But vendors and customers have wised up and now realize IP storage is not the Fibre Channel challenger that it was first made out to be.
Instead, the industry now sees the IP storage and iSCSI -- the Internet protocol networking standard for linking data storage -- as complements to Fibre Channel, not replacements. So where will IP storage networks prove useful? As products come out, customers and vendors are getting a better view of the real-world implications of the technology.
