Thank you for your thoughtful and educated response. "I take exception with your view of the "vicegerency" of the faithful." It is not my view, it is Quranic. It is not limited to the faithful but is a base statement about the human condition to live decently and be morally just as God's purpose in creating you individually or en-mass. Not one of you is more of a videgenerat of this than any other. Not one of you is more entitled to God's favor than any other. If you are lifted at all in this life it is because of your talents or skills and in that up lifting you have the obligation to go good with your circumstances. This is the directive to 'Islamic' nations and to individuals that has totally been corrupted by ALL religious pro and con Authorities. It completely authorises democratic behavior among organizations and completely condemns any kind of class struggle, ethnic conflic, national contempt, religious intolerance, elitism of any sort. " Rather like the myth of equality in the U.S., ..." And yet it is this myth that keeps the hopeful supporting the ideals of American democracy. It is this principle that has driven vast changes in our culture since the revolutionary break from the Monarchy of England (and Spain). It is also this myth (ideal) ... if/when it becomes the focus that can turn the M.E. political compass in a new direction. At the moment all I am able to see coming from the M.E. is a lot of chest beating and threats to serve us our butt on a platter... If we don't find a way to refocus our intercourse it is going to get way way worse. "You must realize that America and Americans have now lost all, ALL credibility in the Muslim world." That can change too. We have huge egos... Our attitude is that EVERYTHING American is better than EVERYTHING any where else. That simply isn't true. We have one of the worst cultures of sexual harrassment and sexual assault on women. Well, OK it comes with opening every situation to mixing people. What we haven't dealt with is that some of those situations compromising individuals right to privacy and protection. Other cultures see this very clearly but we don't hear them (or our victims) when they try to point it out. Just like cultures that don't allow men and women to mix at all (outside of marriage) don't hear us (or their victims) when we point out the lack of freedom or equal treatment. Right Wing Conservatives don't listen to you when you make blanket bashing statements about them. You don't listen to them when they make blanket bashing statements about Left wing liberals... A lot could change to move the compass from conflict to cooperation... but probably wont.
