"My point was that a cause and effect for bombing to influence elections was established."

If it had not been Spain, in any event the precedent would be established in the U.S. An Al Qaeda attack in the U.S. during October will almost certainly swing the election to Bush.

If the election was so certain for Zapatero (and it probably was), why was it necessary to explode ten bombs?

I don't know who told you that, but Aznar's party was the favourite before the Spanish elections.

If they had not lied so blatantly to the Spanish nation and told outright that it was Al-Qaeda, my guess is that they would still be elected - don't think US is the only place where people unite behind their leaders when attacked.

However, Aznar acted like an idiot. He probably thought that he would be blamed for the attack if the nation learned it was Al-Qaeda, and pushed for the ETA explanation. He apparently (personally) called major newspapers and magazines a couple of times per day to insist it was ETA. He pushed for a UN resolution condemning ETA for the bombings, although member states expressed their discomfort at naming ETA so soon. All this was not lost on Spanish people, who detested this tragedy being used by Aznar for political gain. And so they voted for Zapatero.

Hopefully we can start to vote liars out of office in the States

Amen.
