If anything, the killing of Nick Berg, right at the seat of the occupation force, shows that it isn't going well. This crime, against an American in Iraq, would have been unthinkable before the invasion. Not because Saddam's government was not vicious. But because they feared the consequences. So now who is there to hold to account in this chaos ? Is Bremer going to answer for the lack of security ?

The other issue that is seldom mentioned is that these "contractors" such as Nick Berg and the ones that were killed in Falouja (sp?) are Mercenaries. They went over there looking to fight the Iraqis for money. A lot of these guys were working in the prisons. It sounds like they are all over the place in Iraq. To use the word "contractors" sounds like the guys were there working on someone's house! They are mercenaries! That shouldn't be constued in any way to justify their killing. The act and the brutality are horrible. But as some have mentioned, this is a war... and these are soldiers, no matter what they choose to call them.

I happened to hear MSNBC when the story broke yesterday.
They have a military consultant, a Colonel who won Congressional Medal of Honor. He and his translator viewed the tape. He said his translator (Who he has worked with for years and described as having superior skills) reported this:

The person who spoke was of lower working class, not educated or sophisticated. He said the accents were not Iraqi. He placed the accent with some certainty as being Egyptian.

Can't find a link. Have been looking. If anyone sees info. on the analysis of the accents, please post.
