Oh, they like modernity all right. Toyota pickups and satellite phones add a lot of convenience to life in the 16th Century. And that's about the extent of it.

"Some very intelligent people argue that it's anti-modernity. I disagree, I think they are
morphing modernity into something compatible with Islam.

Islam has alway spread quickly. Malaysia went Islam in less than 200 years. Only speculation on whats in store in the future. There are many who like to see the United Nations greatly strengthened, hold all the power of the World's Arms and armies, including Nukes, collect taxes, and make the world one big totalitarian socialist state. And it takes the people of the world individually witnessing the horrors of a world without UN rule. The first globalization attempts of World War I and World War II largely failed because the communication technologies of today were not available. The atrocities and horrors occurred but did not have the worldwide global effect anticipated. Today is different with instant communications of multimedia information. I believe the terrorists of today are funded secretely both those that want to see Globalization succeed. Who are these people? IMF? World Bank? Secret Societies? I don't know but would like to see them exposed for what they are. The result will be wholesale exchange of freedoms and rights for UN security. There is a major flaw the globalists haven't considered (or maybe they have). All it takes is a small elite group of evil people to assume the power of the UN to make living on Earth a shear hell unleashed for all inhabitants and with no checks or balances on power wielded by a few. I think the globalists will go hard after Islamists, Jews and Christians given the chance. I could be wrong. Might just be Jews and Christians.

We're competitors, cultural and economic competitors

Really? The "culture" is medieval, to say the least. The entire economic output of the Muslim world, less oil, would do well to equal California.

Some very intelligent people argue that it's [islamism is] anti-modernity. I disagree, I think they are morphing modernity into something compatible with Islam

Islamism shares every characteristic with virulent fascism as exemplified by the Nazis.

As such, it's "by definition" anti-modernity.

Its defining characteristic is nostalgia for a past, real or imaginary. It denies the passage of time.

Islamism is a political ideology which uses religious vocabulary.

Islamism is trying to morph Islam into something incompatible with modernity.

Islamists picked up some marxist and new age vocabulary but this doesn't mean for a moment they are modifying modernity into something compatible with Islam. On the contrary, they are attempting to destroy modernity.

Islamism believes in the paramountcy of faith and rulers. Modernity believes in the paramountcy of reason and self rule. These belief systems are incompatible.

Islamism is just getting started, and it's spreading.

Why? I am no expert but I think it's a result of wealth and globalization in Muslim countries. They are morphing globalization into something Islamic.

Islamism got a huge shot in the arm because a couple of feudal governments, Iran and Saudi Arabia, had a windfall of oil wealth and could prosleytize islamism to a degree even US fundamental Christians find difficult to compete with. They are making a very strong attempt to hijack all of Islam and turn it into a political movement.

The oil wealth flooding into those two countries made all foreign goods cheaper than domestic, and made huge nunmbers of their young men unemployable in productive employment except as preachers. (This also solved the problem of what to do with hordes of unemployed young men in countries with no political headroom).

Why attack us? We're competitors, cultural and economic competitors.

Because islamism is fascistic - unlike, say, pentacostalism or modernism - its "missionaries" have no inhibitions against employing violence and murdering their competitors.
