<<A few years ago I developed really severe asthma.>>

Last Christmas they diagnosed my fishing buddy with pulmenary fibrosis. By March he was on oxygen 24/7. 20' was about as far as he could walk. Immune system eating his lungs. Two weeks ago the medication caused his neck to swell up bigger than his shoulders and he went into a coma.

Dr. Buteyko determined that many diseases.....asthma, diabetes, sinitis, obesity, allergies, arthritis, depression, emphysema, Lyme's disease to name a few....... are stress related and are caused by chronic hyperventilation. What he proved in clinical trials is that the more you hyperventilate, the more CO2 your body loses and the weaker your immune system becomes. Naturally, your body doesn't like this scenario so it develops defenses such as asthma, diabetes, sinitus, etc in an effort to slow you down and prevent the loss of more CO2. Anyone who has had asthma knows they can no longer run around and do a lot of things like they could before.

Buteyko showed that the body's need for CO2 is critical and that CO2 plays a much bigger role in our body's functioning than many realize.......for example, its CO2 that carries needed oxygen into our blood cells from the lungs. Its the level of CO2 that determines when we breath and how fast. The list goes on.

I know that Buteyko's theories are correct because I have watched as my health has improved doing his exercises. For an example, two years ago, I was allergic to peanuts, olive oil, certain meats etc and whenever I ate them I would get very sick. Now they rarely make me sick............and I am still not at the level that Buteyko says is good health.

As for your buddy, I don't know if fibrosis is one of the auto immune deficiency diseases that can be helped with Buteyko's exercises. I am sure Dr. Buteyko would say yes but I don't know if there is any documented evidence that he has cured anyone with that disease. I do know that his second wife had emphysema, and when they met, had been given only a few years to live. Western MDs consider emphysema a progressive disease that is irreversible and ends in the person's death. After nearly ten years of his exercises, Dr. Buteyko cured her of emphysema........quite extraordinary. Dr. Buteyko himself, died recently at the ripe old age of 80. He died in mid conversation.......his body apparently just stopped. It was mechanical failure as opposed to death from a disease.

I would show your friend the buteyko website. Buteyko is Russian so he gets very little recognition in the US. Few American MDs know of him. My cousin who is an MD thinks he makes sense but refuses to endorse him wholeheartedly. Essentially Buteyko believed that our bodies can cure themselves. After the past two years, I know that its possible to get better by reducing your breathing as he recommends.

At a minimum following Buteyko's methods will help your buddy, if not directly dealing with the fibrosis, then by bolstering his immune system.

Good luck!

His condition doesn't warrant a transplant because the disease could come back. OTOH he could get a transplant of a left lung from a smoker which they can't use for regular transplants. For the left lung they don't have to remove the heart. It's yes he can then no he can't, over and over while he's still in a coma.
