THIS IS THE ENEMY
By Cori Dauber

Appropos of the conversation that has taken place across the blogosphere all day about the amazing absence of the images from the death of Nick Berg, in stark contrast to the unavoidable presence of the prison photo images and constant chatter about them, Newsnight on CNN just had on (for about thirty seconds, in contrast to the several minutes with the Senator describing the new prison photos, just to underline the point, but still) the editorial page editor of the Dallas Morning News. Their lead editorial tomorrow morning will be, "This is the Enemy," and it will be accompanied by a photo of a terrorist holding Nick Berg's head.

It's a bit difficult to imagine precisely what she's describing, which is that they've "blacked out" the entire head in order to be less gruesome. Her justification to Aaron Brown? We're in the news business and that means "describing reality." He, having earlier noted that showing the video would be pornographic (and I don't know that that's wrong) tells her, "good for you." Good for you? Then why is CNN unwilling even to hold up a mock up of the page?

It's nice to see that CNN is willing to celebrate the bravery of other journalists.

"Nick Berg's decision to enter a war zone and walk onto a battlefield unarmed and unprotected was a personal choice."

Mike,
Yes but he and others were encouraged by his government. BTW, the Yenta brigade now indicates that Nick decided to forgo US aid in getting out. I cant understand that because buddies of his over there say, he couldnt wait to go home.
Watching him and Danny Perl go down reminds me of a different era when Michael Schwerner and Andy Goodman(classmate of mine) were killed in Mississippi alongside James Chaney. Just a historical memory and probably no relationship to each other except for idealistic Jews perhaps naively putting themselves in harms way. Mike
