No, your logic is entirely flawed. These crimes were not commited by street criminals who of course do not reflect society as a whole. They were commited by U.S. troops, representing the U.S. government, trained by the U.S. government, under juridiction of the U.S. government. There should have been the proper controls in place to prevent this sort of abuse from occuring. That is what reflects poorly on our nation, especially when we're supposedly there to stop this sort of nonsense and trying to build good will. Apparently, the Pentagon had been warned for months that mistreatment was going on in prisons in Iraq and only started court martial procedures when the photos went public.
