but as i recall, Russell's ill-conceived "synthetic short" referred specifically to USD-denominated debt being itself a "short" against USD, because people would need to, uh, pay the debt back in...dollars? something like that. i agree w/you that the other true anti-USD plays like AUD and gold acted more like a short and have contributed to the strong reversal.
