RJC Challenges Kerry to Repudiate Anti-Israel Platform

May 12, 2004, WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC) today challenged Democratic presidential nominee Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) to repudiate a platform resolution adopted last weekend in Seattle by the King County (WA) Democratic Party committing to "withhold U.S. tax dollars from Israel while it is in violation of international law."
"It is outrageous that the King County Democrats have taken it upon themselves to falsely accuse Israel of being in violation of international law and to demand that U.S. aid to Israel should be withheld," said RJC Executive Director Matthew Brooks. "We call upon Sen. Kerry and the Washington State Democratic Party to publicly repudiate this outrageous position. If they don't repudiate it, it's a clear indication that Sen. Kerry and Washington Democrats won't support Israel as strongly as President Bush has."

According to a report published May 9 by The Seattle Times, the King County Democrats adopted this anti-Israel statement as one of the amendments to the party's platform. The Times reported the anti-Israel statement was introduced by Naseem Tuffaha, Seattle Chapter director of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee.

The Democrats' anti-Israel position was endorsed by Samia El-Moslimany, vice chair of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), who was giving CAIR's public-official-of the-year award to U.S. Rep. Jim McDermitt (D-WA) for his support of the Muslim community, the Times reported. El-Moslimany called the Democrats' anti-Israel platform "tremendous news" and said, "This is a memorable day."

The Times quoted McDermott as saying the passage of the Democrats' anti-Israel platform should encourage all Muslim Americans to get involved in the political process.

"Where does Sen. Kerry stand on this anti-Israel platform? The position of the King County Democrats against Israel and the support of that position by Rep. McDermott is extremely disturbing," Brooks said. "Unfortunately anti-Israel elements have become much more prominent and outspoken among Democrats in recent years. This is in sharp contrast with the Republican Party, whose leadership is firmly committed to supporting Israel, America's strongest ally in our shared war on terrorism."
