It doesn't matter. We got a glimpse of what these terrorists are capable of. The Congress, The Media and the people have shown their outrage over prisoner abuse in Iraq and you can bet some of those prisoners abused were terrorists and evil to the core. The point is abuse is abuse regardless of the prisoner. If Berg was helping Al Qaida we may have put him to death had we caught him. What we wouldn't have done is saw off his head with a bread knife. The terrorists who killed him stated it was in retaliation to US prisoner abuse so I don't think they were doing us any favors - this was a power kill for shock value.
