The power of Imperial Rome, Stalin's Russia, and various religions was in their subservience to the spider at the center. Capitalism has many hands, but the only spider they worship is money. The web is tugged in various directions with myriad alliances, which prevents certain excesses of genocide. As soon as the Catholic Church broke down into myriad Protestant sects of spiders who commanded allegiance, it lost its ability to control thought, belief, and behaviour, and to treat life with arrogant contempt. Stalin killed all the spiders and became the one true church: the church of fanatical ideology.
