Heard on the Beat: TEL -- not Lam -- prevails at Intel

Silicon Strategies

Silicon Strategies' stealth reporter, C.V. Dee, has egg all over his face. Dee recently reported that Lam Research Corp. beat Tokyo Electron Ltd. (TEL) for the 65-nm dielectric etch business at Intel Corp.

But according to our friends at Lehman Brothers Japan, TEL--not Lam--prevailed at Intel. Japan's TEL expects "to keep 90%-plus share of oxide etch at Intel," according to Lehman Brothers. TEL is the incumbent supplier of oxide etchers at Intel, while Hitachi Ltd. is reportedly the poly etch supplier of choice.

"[TEL] sees no problem at 65-nm, which is in final evaluation/pilot stage," according to the firm. "Intel may buy a couple tools from Lam, but TEL expects to supply the equipment for volume production. [TEL is] already talking with Intel about 45-nm etch tools."

Recently, Applied Materials Inc. won the high-current implanter business for Intel's 65-nm node. Applied was the incumbent vendor. Meanwhile, Varian Equipment Associates Inc. took the medium-current implant order at the chip giant.

ASML Holding NV and Nikon Corp. own the lithography business at Intel. TEL dominates the track slots at Intel. And rumors continue to run rampant that Novellus Systems Inc. won a "portion" of Intel's PVD business.
