Similar to other newsworthy spheres these days, large groups of people don't want to know the truth and have an incredible determination to pretend the truth does not even exist."If these people aren't just plain stupid, then WHAT is the matter with them?" ah, yes, the emperor's new clothes........a great truth. Mass hypnosis is not a rare phenomenom at all, in fact it is a constant and necessary ingredient in any society. It enables group members to perceive reality in similar ways and have consensus, since without consensus the society and it's benefits could not exist. Many psychological experiments have shown how one's sense of reality is overwhelmingly influenced by the opinions of others. Certain stock market phenomena are simply a side effect of a basic human/herd trait. Surely the same applies in the art market. The New York Times today published a piece about the few U.S. Abu Gharib guys who tattled on their compatriots, and how every group has a few members who are less influenced by group-think. Worth a quick read, imo. Despite all of Tony's shortcomings, he did one good service very effectively. (in fact, those shortcomings are probably clsoely related, psychologically, to the ones that enabled the good service) Through outrageous behavior and loud screaming, through building a 'counter-mob', he destroyed the 'yahooligans' mass hypnosis many times, forcing them to see the emperor's varicose veins. He revealed the real truth in brilliant clarity - he was able to break the spell. I do surely miss that. Peter p.s. this post is now on-topic
