Great. It is horrible to have convictions, because then you might behave arrogantly. On the other hand, if one does not have conviction enough to resist, those who have no scruples will prevail. So, we can wring our hands and wonder what is truth, while the Nazis establish their Reich, or we can act according to conscience and oppose them, even if it exposes us to moral ambiguities.

On the other hand, the preconditions for success do not exist, we are assured, although literacy was less than 50% at the time of the founding of the United States; although the authoritarian cultures of Germany and Japan managed a transition to democracy; although even something less than full democracy, but more moderate than Saddam's regime, or that of the mullahs, would be an improvement.

Finally, the prison scandal made a mockery of American idealism, because---- well, frankly, the leap in logic is unexplained. But it must be true, because Joe Klein said so, and Win posted it. Hm........
