Anybody else think that powell/bremer saying if iraqis asking us to leave will cause us to just that. Of course, no one expects anyone to ask us to leave on 7/1 but i think a political case can be made that such a request (eg end of year) would politically be good for interim iraqi regime and for Bush. We would have a somewhat handpicked regime asking us to leave, knowing full well if problems arose they would then ask for an extension. And domestically bush could point to a firm exit date. Thats the light at the end of the tunnel we never got in vietnam.
And the major benefit is that this might cause iraqis to rally around the new flag and take some new responsibitliy--police, military and civilan ---in fighting the baathists in the triangle, al sadr in the south, and al quaeda and their foreign fighters anywhere and everywhere. mike
