Lebanon condemns beheading

By Agence France Presse (AFP)

Friday, May 14, 2004

Lebanon denounced on Thursday the "ignoble" beheading of an American in Iraq but voiced suspicion at the timing of the "ugly crime," which pushed the torture of Iraqi prisoners by US-led forces out of the headlines.

"The slaughtering of the American national is as ugly, criminal and ignoble as the abuse of Iraqi detainees in Abu Ghraib prison by US soldiers," Foreign Minister Jean Obeid told AFP.

"It even covers the despicable American acts and turns eyes away from them," he said.

"It is indeed a priceless favor to those seeking to cover for those ugly acts perpetrated against Iraqi civilians."

"We denounce this ignoble and shameful act and consider it a blow perpetrated by ignorant, criminal or suspicious people," Obeid added.

Hizbullah harshly criticized the beheading and questioned the timing of such a "horrible" act, saying it insulted Islam and Muslims, especially since the perpetrators claimed to be fervent followers of the "merciful and gracious religion that honors human values."
