lorne, I think some of the folks in the US especially the conservative right should take a cue from the recently concluded elections in India. The Indian President is a Muslim. He is also the father of the Indian nuclear bomb. The Prime Minister elect is born of Italian parentage and is a woman. India is predominantly Hindu and it is the second largest Muslim country in the world. It also consists of 10% Christians. So far you must be wondering what is my point. Well here is my point.

With all this diversity, democracy not only works but thrives in India. The Indians recently voted out their Govt. not based on religion/communion, not based on abortion supporters and opposers etc., not based on terrorists attacks as in Spain. But the common Indian voter considered on a very fundamental issue at the polls. And that issue is the economic upliftment of the general masses. It is very astonishing that in a democracy like the US, the right wing extremists are exhorting the general public to consider issues such as whether one gets communion or not, or whether one marries into money or not. We have become a laughing stock of the world in the past 3 years for such advocacies.

I hope we will get back to the issues of human rights, economic opportunities, international trade and those issues which brought the US fame and glory in the eyes of the international community. Who cares what one goddamn priest holed up somewhere (probably sodomizing some altar boy) says about how we should vote? We all know that the US priesthood as well as the TV evangelists are corrupt and have fathered some bastards also. So why bother with them. Instead let us turn towards those priests in countries where they are really sacrificing such as Mother Teresa mission for aids etc. etc.

Nancy Reagan pleas with conservatives to allow stem cell research. Bush lied when he said that stem cell research kills embryos. He was taking the farthest rightwing viewpoint there, that any form of fetal tissue is a "human being". That's just nonsense.

As for abortion rights, why is it always men who never have sex who try to dictate what women can and cannot do with their reproductgive systems? Also, if the conservatives dislike abortions so mkuch why don't they fully support RU-486 pills? That would almost end any need for abortions. Why not? because what they really are against is women having sexual freedom. And men too I guess. So we'd have a society where no one ever gets laid unless they're married. Nice ideal but not at all realistic.
