It was really stagflation. Stagnant economy and run away inflation. Doesn't seem possible but Carter pulled it off.

I remember going into a S&L in early '80 and getting 21% on a jumbo CD. S&L later called me asking if I'd like to take some money out of the CD, no penalties, and pay off my $29k 6.5% mortgage.

ak, If you've rested your case, then the jury returns in 30 seconds to claim you are wrong. <g> Stagflation sucks. But deficits and debt are greater systemic problems and hurt the country for decades. Stagflation is overcome with a couple of years of tough love. The Republican debt machine is a cancer that could kill us, though I think we'll wise up eventually. But the cure is more likely to take many years.
