Gawd! How did we get on ribbons? I don't recall bringing them up. Did I?

The difference should be obvious to even an idiot like you: When Rumsfeld shook hands with Saddam, Saddam hadn't committed any atrocities and was on our side. When Kerry threw his medals, Kerry had already committed war crimes and was on their side.

Actually, Kerry is the one who caused the focus on ribbons.
He made Vietnam and his service a centerpiece of his campaign.
He essentially condoned months of bashing Bash
on his NG service and the cries of awol. Since he set
the Vietnam agenda, he necessarily opened himself to the
ribbons v. medals controversy. The way he handled it
TODAY is very illustrative of the man's character, and
related flaws.

As for shaking hands with Saddam in 1983,
you'd be pretty naive not to realize that this
country has been forced to deal with scoundrels
in the past. After all, some of Kerry's best loved
heads of states and organizations (like the UN)
are scoundrels of sorts. They aided and abetted
Saddam in far more recent time for their own
greed.

So, exactly what is your point about the hand-shaking of
Saddam in 1983? You've pointed it out, but haven't spit out
why you think it matters.
