Hawk, from your last few posts it seems that when presented with views that run counter to your beliefs you tend to personalize the disagreements by questioning the selflessness, compassion or motives of another? In the event that you do have genuine questions about my motives, let me say, again, that: I do care about our soldiers in Iraq; I do care about Iraqi children; I do care about the children of others who send their sons or daughters to sacrifice in Iraq; I do care about those in the future who may fight against terrorism; I do care about the victims of 9/11. Have I missed anything? The things we disagree on are the ways to minimize the suffering from, and maximize the battle against, terrorism. You apparently believe we can, through the force of our will and the use of our military, transform cultures and overcome hatreds and passions that are fueled by big ideas. I think we can't and that it only worsens matters when we attempt to do "social engineering" in foreign lands backed by deadly force or the fear of deadly force. That's the point I'm making and I believe your point is that it "must" and "will" work if we have the "will power." If we leave out the "you don't care about...." I think we'll have better discussions. You must know that although I think the methods you advocate for dealing with this hugely important problem will make it worse and not better, I never question the fact that you passionately WANT to find ways to make things improve. You bet they are confused and indecisive. And that's why they need the rest of the world to rehabilitate them and educate their children to take over and create a new society. It seems that some people take a dim view of having others "educate their children" and "rehabilitate" them when their core values are set and have been set for generations. As I've said before, why not try something that would potentially resolve the conflict that WE can control; why not adopt Muslim values and the Muslim religion. If that sounds silly then why don't you think it's silly when you reverse things and ask that they be "rehabilitated?" Is it because you are convinced that our way is the one "true way?" Are we attempting to do missionary work again under the triple heading of Christianity, democracy and western values?
