Oh, I think you misread Freidman's essay. His point was pretty simple -- Sharon's expressed a desire to pull the settlers out of Gaza, and some in his party disagree. He thinks the people who disagree are religious extremists, and he thinks they're wrong, but not only that, he thinks the majority of the Israeli people think they're wrong.

He is analogizing to Sadr's army. He thinks they are religious extremists, but not only that, he thinks the majority of the Iraqi people think they're wrong.

Freidman's had little patience for the settlers for as long as I've been reading him. He thinks that the settlements are untenable, and that Israeli policy is distorted by trying to protect them, and that not only Jews but Palestinians die in vain over them.

Sharon has always said that some of the West Bank settlements are necessary as early warning trip wires in case of invasion, but the Gaza settlements don't serve that purpose, so, what purpose do they serve?
