I hadn't realized how significant the fire bombing destruction was in Japan (100,000 people (civilians) dead in one night in the fire bombing of Tokyo alone).

It's odd how the face-to-face killing of civilians catches our imaginations and fills us with horror, while the long distance and impersonal act of dropping missiles or bombs on a greater number of innocent people seems less personal. I suffer from that insensitivity and have to remind myself that it's the same tragedy for those who are the recipients; although apparently it's more palatable for those who "pull the trigger."

Sometimes I'm surprised at us.
