The Bangladeshi parliament has amended its constitution to reserve 45 seats for women. Another positive development, reformation within Islamic countries and not swelling of ranks.<<‘‘We hope there will be, on the part of our Muslim brothers and sisters,’’ its authors write, ‘‘a growing awareness that fundamental liberties, the inviolable rights of the person, the equal dignity of man and woman, the democratic principle of government and the healthy lay character of the State are principles that cannot be surrendered.’

Prime Minister Khaleda Zia is one of the few women in parliament. The women-only seats will raise the total number of MPs to 345 and will be selected in proportion to each party's support at the last election.

Prime Minister Khaleda Zia has promised to gradually increase the number of women in government.

Parliament approved the amendment by 226 votes to one, despite a continuing boycott of proceedings by the opposition.
