Re: Is IOS really 15 years old?

Yes, with incremental improvements. Started in the spare bedroom. Has added features exponentially with each new software release. And the complexity is mind-numbing.

However, the look & feel remains the same, and is similar to VMS (Vax). Nirvana for the ultimate geek. It is said that "Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery". Look at the number of networking equipment vendors modelling their CLI after IOS. It is the gold standard in the industry.

There have been plans to re-write the monolithic OS for several years now. The first iteration (IOS next-gen?) imploded in customer trials and went under the covers. Now there is news out again that new 'modular' software will be available soon. This will bring even better predictability to the Internet (think software upgrades).

BTW, JunOS is very elegant. Some say that it forces you to think like a programmer (as in matching curly braces). If you know any programming language, JunOS would be easy to follow.
