To compare the process in Iraq with the process in 1787 is just a mite ridiculous. Among many other differences, we were a fairly homogenous group culturally, and the number of people was extremely limited.

Gee, if you leave off the first sentence, you are describing Iraq.
In fact Iraq (with the exception of the Muslim militant extremists) is much much more homogeneous than the US ever was or is. And Iraq (like America way back when) certainly has very few politicians who could actively participate in the process of forming a democracy.

PS. The organized political liberation process for America began in June 1776 with Thomas Jefferson's draft of the Declaration of Independence
