Hi Coug
Had the funniest passport adventure. There are 5 of us, as you know, and we all trooped down together to the post office to order some expedited passports. When I had requested birth certificates many years ago for my son and husband, I was sent certified abstracts of live birth- we even got my husband's 1988 passport using that abstract. Now, however, the abstract is no good. The postmistress informed me that the long form is the only acceptable form. "Why then," I asked " did the state vital records send me these documents, if they are of no use?" Well, of course she didn't know. I had to drive quite a long way to get a long form version of my son's birth cert- but (miracle of miracles) the civil servant I dealt with actually apologized for sending me the wrong document, and gave me a free birth certificate. Ok, it didn't pay for my time, but still- I don't think I've ever had a nice apology (unasked for even!) from a civil servant- who, in my experience, are not always as civil as they could be- though they do have to put up with a lot, no doubt about it.
