CB,
Well, first of all, Adams was not at the CC. And while Madison did have a lively correspondence with Jefferson while TJ was in France, he did't, as far as I am aware, talk about the CC while the CC was actually happening. At least not the substance of what was going on. They honored their oath of secrecy because most--perhaps all--of them felt that the Articles were failing badly, something needed to be done to shore up the central govt, and heal the rifts that were indisputably growing between the various states.

True, people know that the CC was happening. But all of the delegates were sworn to secrecy, and as far as I know, that secrecy was actually kept. Not even the delegates themselves knew what was going to be in the final draft until the last month or so--most things were up in the air. And at any given time, there were only maybe 30-35 people present, with delegates wandering in and out of the proceedings. Yes, they reached the Great Compromise sometime in mid-July, I think it was. But while that was crucial, it wasn't the end of the story. There were plenty of details to be determined. I have read chunks of Madison's notes, especially for the months of June and the beginning of July, and a few other weeks. I'd suggest reading Jack Rakove's Original Meanings, far more substantive than Miracle at Philadelphia.
