Islam is what it is, an abstraction of faith and life's practice that people study and apply to their own circumstance. It isn't going to lighten or darken up. The people are quite another story...history. There is ample example of tolerance if you care to look. We are focused on the extreme of compulsive fundamentalism which, interestingly enough, is forbidden in Islam. Of course, there would be no reason for God to have declared it a sin if we weren't going to be witnessing it...just like every other form of disobedience to moral law. Makes no sense to make moral laws about things that don't happen. If you understand this, you understand why Bush wisely noted from the start that this isn't a war against Islam.

Re: Nothing is going to get any better until Islam can lighten up and become more tolerant.

That would be nice (and no reason to stop hoping for that, or setting a good example for Democracy and tolerance)... but I'd rather focus on things that we can actually achieve with our own hands and our own smarts --- such as energy independence for the US.

Then, we wouldn't have to be beholden to Middle Eastern Kings and Autocrats.
