Mood Of Michigan

Michigan voters cool off on Bush, war

With prison abuse scandal, soldiers' deaths, approval of president slips from 63% to 50%

By Deb Price / Detroit News Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON — Revelations about the mistreatment of Iraqi prisoners have rattled Michigan voters and apparently contributed to a sharp decline in support for President Bush’s handling of the war and his general popularity in the state, according to a Detroit News poll.

Michiganians don’t hold Bush personally responsible for the abuse of prisoners. But roughly one-fourth of those surveyed last week said they are less likely to vote for Bush in light of the disclosures.

Fifty percent of those surveyed said they view Bush favorably, down from 63 percent in a News poll conducted in January.

Last week, 50 percent of those polled said they approve overall of the job Bush is doing as president, down from 63 percent in the January survey.

Asked whether we should have gone to war with Iraq, 51 percent supported that decision, down from 61 percent in the earlier poll.

As for the administration’s management of the war, 51 percent said they disapprove and 46 percent were in support. That question wasn’t asked in January.
