Is it possible that Ariel Sharon ran a huge con job on Condoleezza Rice? She was apparently the administration official who most owned the endorsement of the Gaza pullback.

No, it doesn't add up. Sharon needed a plan, any plan, to avoid having some totally unacceptable plan foisted on him. He chose this Gaza plan and thought he could solidify his position by showing that he could get the Likud to back him. He was wrong, and his own position has been weakened as a result. But the plan has majority support and will go forward in some form.
