You are so right.

I don't know if this is a true story but it was supposed to be Bill Gates testifying before a Congressional hearing.

He was boasting and said that if the auto industry had progressed as the PC industry, he said something like you would have a car that could go 0-60 in 3 seconds, get 75 MPG and have luxury interiors.

A congressman answered, "Yeah, but the car would break down every block and you'd have to restart it each time."

People buy new computers and operating systems just to clean out the junk and start over.

Great point philv...one that I never gave a lot of thought to until you mentioned it. I know many people who have gotten very frustrated with their computers (probably for that very reason) and either put it in the closet (an elderly neighbor of mine) or gone out and purchased a new one thinking that their's was botched beyond repair.

To all: I have a 30gb HD running Win98 SE, with 384 Ram, using Internet Explorer 6.0. About every 2 hours of operation the thing freezes up. Nothing works and I have to hard reboot. I have done all the maintenance necessary including Pitstop but it still happens. I have been thinking of installing Linux 7.0 as a operating system. Do you think that this would be a solution for a non-technical guy to attempt?

Phil,

I think the windows Service Pack 2, due out this year will incorporate the features you are talking about.

Microsoft Shows Off New Security Features
Gates unveils protection technologies, antispam initiative at RSA Conference
News Story by Carol Sliwa

MARCH 01, 2004 (COMPUTERWORLD) - Microsoft Corp. gave every indication that it's keeping security on the front burner, as Chairman Bill Gates made the trip to last week's RSA Conference in San Francisco to preview upcoming features in Windows, new protection technologies and an antispam initiative.
Gates introduced the first public demonstration of new security features due in the first half of the year with Service Pack 2 for Windows XP. One prominent update will be the newly enhanced and renamed Windows Firewall, formerly called the Internet Connection Firewall, which will be enabled by default rather than having to be set manually by the user.

Another new feature, the Windows Security Center, will let users check the status of firewalls, automatic updates and antivirus protection. If a problem is discovered, the user will receive a notification with recommended fixes.

To combat spam, Microsoft is touting its Coordinated Spam Reduction Initiative, which includes technical specifications for establishing Caller ID-like functionality for e-mail. The technology would enable a recipient to ensure that a message came from the identified domain.
