You really think that anyone who wants to harm US athletes will be deterred by them not waving the flag? "Well, we were going to slit their throats, but since they didn't wave their flag after winning their medal, we won't"? I think the American athletes would be better off if they each had their own armed bodyguard, but this "don't wave the flag, it might upset people" is for the birds (and weasels).
